The Sky Is Also Blue

There’s a young lady in the corner, not so far
from the dance floor, lost in the fantasy of what
her first dance should be like and with whom.

She waits with her head slightly bowed. Insecurity
creates beads of sweat on her perfectly scrubbed
and powdered skin. She looks down pretending to admire
her new gown, which was flown in from France, for this special
occasion. Her nervous hands rub up and down the front of her
dress as she smooths out invisible wrinkles and dries
damp palms.

Across the room, her mother looks on, wondering which
young man will take her daughter’s hand and lead her
onto the dance floor. She smiles. Her little wallflower
has bloomed into a beautiful rose.

And still the young lady waits. Waits for a young man to think
she’s pretty enough to spend some time with. Pretty enough
to be his partner in her cornflower blue dress; the color
of a tepid sky and a broken heart.
