Elina has been my friend through six crazy years of high school and college. Moving in together, however, marks the start of a new adventure. I have to outfit us properly for the journey.
When a classmate first introduced Elina to me at a party, I didn’t think we’d get along. For starters, I prefer lounging on couches and worming through books. Elina’s sporty and strong, and makes use of that big, gray frame she inherited from her parents. But over time, I have found Elina caring and big-hearted, literally; sharper than you’d expect from a jock; and a tremendous listener. I guess those huge, flopping ears come in handy!
Anyway, we’ve stayed close. And when Elina declared her desire to move north with me after school, I jumped at the chance to continue our friendship into early adulthood.
One problem, Elina’s got tropical blood. Built for the savanna, she now must face the cold wilds of Boston. I’ve helped her shop, and I think we’ve gotten most of the items she’ll need to survive a New England winter.
The last thing, however, I’m saving for Christmas. Elina relies on her trunk for everything, and it’s so prominent, the wind chill is gonna ruin her. I didn’t see a wool trunk warmer among our conquests the other night, and I don’t think she has one already. And I feel confident that she wouldn’t make her own. Everyone knows, elephants never knit.
