Leave it for Tomorrow

Reading under covers to preserve sky of today
by Toni G.

Maybe my responsibilities will wait for
the rain and not ruin the blue sky of today.
I want to stay in and not worry about
the many errands that need to be done.
I want to fall into an unmade bed, snuggle
deep in lukewarm covers. I’ll eat
when I’m hungry, not the scheduled
breakfast at 7, lunch at 1, and dinner at 8.
Allow me a day to rest endlessly in a lounge
chair while reading work by a poet
long ago dead. I want to cry warm tears
for someone I don’t know; a pathetically sad
character penned by an author two
or three decades ago. I’ll hide from reality
for just one day and maybe my responsibilities
will wait for the rain and not ruin the blue
sky of today.
