Jump

jump
by Toni G.

I envy your daring spirit and
your willingness to jump off cliffs
with a scream as your parachute.

I stood there wrapped in fear,
as I watched you leap out into
your future.

Fear is for the masses you yelled,
as your feet left hard grass covered
earth to the nothingness of air.

You’ve always forgiven my cowardice,
my reluctance to leave the ground.
You smiled as you told me I was
an eagle, swearing you’ve seen me in flight,
wings spread wide, gliding higher and higher
above you.

Your time has not yet come, you joked.
But it will. It will. You were certain of it.
I never believed you. Never saw in myself
what you had seen. Never imagining that I
could trust the nothingness of air.
